How Does Magnetic Separation Work in Kaolin Purification?

Magnetic separation is an indispensable physical purification process to remove iron-bearing impurities from raw kaolin ore. It is widely adopted as the front-end pretreatment procedure on JACAN complete kaolin processing production lines, laying a foundation for improving kaolin whiteness and reducing iron content.

1. Basic Working Principle

Kaolin itself is a non-magnetic aluminosilicate mineral and cannot be attracted by magnetic fields. However, associated impurities such as hematite, limonite, magnetite and ilmenite are magnetic or weakly magnetic.
When dispersed kaolin slurry or powder passes through the working zone of a high-gradient magnetic separator:

  1. Strong magnetic field generates magnetic force on iron-containing impurity particles.
  2. Magnetic particles are captured and retained by magnetic media inside the equipment.
  3. Non-magnetic pure kaolin continues to flow through and enters the next processing stage.
After a period of operation, the magnetic field is temporarily removed, and captured iron impurities are flushed out as tailings. Continuous cyclic separation is realized.

2. Key Preconditions for Efficient Kaolin Magnetic Separation

Good separation results cannot be achieved simply by relying on magnetic equipment alone. Several pretreatment steps are essential:

  • Slurry scrubbing and dispersion: Raw kaolin blocks are fully stirred and pulped. Agglomerated mineral clusters are broken apart, so iron impurities wrapped inside kaolin aggregates are exposed.
  • Desanding and classification: Hydrocyclones remove coarse quartz and feldspar first, avoiding coarse particles wrapping fine iron impurities and reducing separation efficiency.
  • Adjust slurry concentration: Proper solid-liquid ratio ensures free movement of mineral particles and prevents particle mutual shielding in the magnetic field.

3. High-Gradient Magnetic Separator — Main Equipment for Kaolin Industry

Ordinary low-intensity magnetic separators can only trap strongly magnetic magnetite and are ineffective for weakly magnetic hematite and limonite.
High-gradient magnetic separators are standard for kaolin purification:

  • The tank is filled with special steel matrix media to create dense, uneven magnetic field gradients.
  • Even weakly magnetic micro iron particles can be captured.
  • It efficiently removes most natural iron oxides embedded in kaolin raw ore before fine grinding.

4. Process Position in Complete Kaolin Production Flow

Raw kaolin ore → Pulping & scrubbing → Hydrocyclone desanding → Multi-stage high-gradient magnetic separation → Filtering / conveying to milling system
Multi-stage serial magnetic separation is often configured: primary rough separation removes large iron minerals, and secondary fine separation captures tiny iron particles to lower total iron indicators steadily.

5. Main Advantages for Kaolin Purification

  1. Physical separation method: No chemical agents are added, avoiding wastewater treatment pressure compared with chemical bleaching.
  2. Low operating cost: Suitable for continuous large-volume industrial production.
  3. Effectively improves base whiteness: Removes most inherent colored iron impurities from raw ore.
  4. Reduce subsequent bleaching dosage: For customers pursuing ultra-high whiteness, qualified magnetic separation can greatly cut consumption of bleaching agents.

6. Limitations to Understand

Magnetic separation cannot eliminate all iron impurities:

  • It cannot remove non-magnetic iron contained in mineral crystal lattices.
  • It cannot avoid secondary iron pollution produced by metal liners and grinding media during milling.

That explains why JACAN matches magnetic separation pretreatment with all-ceramic grinding systems. Physical magnetic separation handles natural ore impurities, while ceramic milling prevents new mechanical iron pollution. For residual embedded iron impurities that magnetic separation cannot remove, chemical reduction bleaching can be used as a deep purification supplement.

Magnetic separation separates non-magnetic kaolin from magnetic iron-bearing contaminants by utilizing differences in mineral magnetism. As the primary iron removal link, it removes most free iron oxide minerals in raw kaolin. When matched with appropriate scrubbing and desanding pretreatment, it becomes the most economical and environmentally friendly core process to upgrade kaolin quality before ultra-fine grinding.
