How to prevent caking during kaolin storage and transportation?

Kaolin powder caking is a common problem in powder handling. It occurs when fine kaolin particles absorb moisture, undergo external compression, or form inter-particle bridges. Caking damages powder flowability, causes feeding blockages and affects final product performance. Preventive measures cover drying control, powder conditioning, packaging, storage environment and transportation operations.

1. Strictly control finished kaolin moisture content

Moisture is the primary trigger for kaolin caking. Kaolin clay has strong hygroscopicity.

  • Keep residual moisture within the specified range, usually below 1% for most dry kaolin powder grades. Higher moisture allows capillary water bridges to form between kaolin platelets.
  • Fully cool kaolin powder before packaging. Hot powder sealed inside bags will cool down and condense water vapor inside the package, leading to localized wet spots and hard lumps.
  • Avoid over-drying excessively. Ultra-low moisture may not reduce caking significantly but increases energy consumption unnecessarily.

2. Optimize powder particle characteristics and add anti-caking agents (when permitted)

  • Improve particle size distribution. Reasonable PSD reduces fine fraction accumulation; excessive submicron kaolin is far more prone to agglomeration.
  • For certain industrial grades, add approved anti-caking agents in low dosage. These agents coat kaolin particle surfaces and block moisture adsorption. Anti-caking additives are not allowed for food, pharmaceutical or high-purity ceramic grades.
  • Break soft agglomerates using a de-agglomerator after drying before packaging to eliminate pre-formed loose clusters.

3. Use suitable moisture-proof packaging materials

  • Select multi-layer composite bags with PE inner liners or aluminum barrier films to block ambient humidity. Ordinary woven bags cannot stop water vapor penetration.
  • Ensure complete heat sealing of bag openings. Damaged or poorly sealed bags are the main entry point for moisture during transit.
  • Choose packaging bags with good mechanical strength to resist extrusion during stacking and transport.

4. Control warehouse storage conditions

  • Maintain low relative humidity in the storage warehouse. Keep RH below 60% ideally. Use dehumidifiers in humid coastal or rainy seasons.
  • Control warehouse temperature and avoid large temperature fluctuations, which cause condensation.
  • Stack bags properly. Do not over-stack. Heavy stacking pressure compresses kaolin powder and accelerates caking. Follow the bag supplier’s stacking height limit.
  • Keep pallets under bags to separate kaolin packages from cold, damp concrete floors. Avoid direct contact with walls.
  • Implement first-in, first-out (FIFO) inventory management. Long-term static storage greatly raises caking risk.

5. Transportation management

  • Keep containers, trucks or shipping containers dry and clean before loading. Check for water leakage or residual moisture.
  • Avoid transporting kaolin in rainy weather without shelter. Cover cargo tightly with waterproof tarpaulins.
  • Reduce severe vibration and impact during transport. Strong vibration can compact fine kaolin powder.
  • Avoid large temperature swings during long-distance sea transport, which is a major cause of condensation inside containers.

6. Troubleshooting for existing caking

Minor soft agglomerates can usually be dispersed by re-grinding or air classification. Hard lumps caused by high moisture cannot be fully recovered and will downgrade product quality. Early prevention is always more economical than post-processing rework.

Kaolin caking in storage and transportation mainly comes from moisture absorption and mechanical compression. The core prevention strategy is stable low moisture output, adequate cooling, moisture-proof packaging, dry warehouse environment, limited stacking load and controlled transport conditions. For high-end kaolin for paper coating and paint, strict moisture and humidity control is mandatory to maintain powder flow performance.
