Can a hammer mill be used for kaolin processing

A hammer mill is high‑speed impact crushing equipment that breaks materials through repeated hammer striking, particle‑on‑particle collision and liner impact. It can be applied in kaolin processing, yet it has clear positioning and limitations. It is mainly used for dry crushing of raw kaolin ore, not suitable for producing high‑value ultrafine coating‑grade kaolin. Its product quality cannot compare with stirred mills or wet ball mills.

How hammer mill works for kaolin

Raw kaolin lumps enter the grinding chamber. High‑speed rotating hammers strike the ore blocks; materials collide against the toothed liner and with each other. Material smaller than sieve hole size passes through the screen and is discharged; over‑size particles remain inside for further impact crushing. Most hammer mills operate under dry conditions.

Suitable application scenarios for hammer mill in kaolin processing

  1. Primary crushing of lump kaolin ore
    Crush large‑size mined kaolin lumps into small particles (0.5‑5 mm), preparing feedstock for subsequent processes. It is commonly used before rotary kiln calcination, dry ball mill or wet slurry preparation. Hammer mill handles bulky raw ore efficiently for material size reduction.
  2. Dry processing of low‑grade filler‑grade kaolin
    For products that do not require complete lamellar structure preservation: paper filling, low‑cost rubber filler, common ceramic raw materials. Hammer mill can produce medium‑fineness kaolin powder (D50 5‑20 μm) in dry flow, simple process and low investment.
  3. Post‑crushing of calcined kaolin clumps
    After calcination, kaolin forms agglomerated clinker. Hammer mill breaks sintered lumps into loose powder before entering next‑step classification.

Main limitations of hammer mill for kaolin

1. Particle size and lamellar structure damage

Hammer mill relies mainly on violent impact force.

  • It is difficult to obtain ultrafine product (D98 < 2 μm). Even with small screen aperture, output contains many coarse particles; particle‑size distribution is very wide.
  • Strong impact force destroys the natural lamellar crystal structure of kaolin platelets. The aspect ratio drops sharply. Therefore, hammer‑milled kaolin cannot meet requirements for high‑grade paper coating pigment, which needs intact thin platelets for gloss and ink receptivity.

2. Not suitable for wet‑processing

Standard hammer mill is dry‑type equipment. It cannot handle high‑moisture sticky kaolin slurry. If feed moisture is too high, screen holes will block frequently, causing equipment overload. For wet‑process kaolin production line, hammer mill can only serve as front‑end ore crushing, not fine grinding for slurry.

3. Impurity contamination risk

High‑speed impact brings wear to hammers and liners. Metal wear debris mixes into kaolin powder, reducing whiteness. This drawback is more prominent for high‑brightness kaolin products.

4. Poor ability for kaolin delamination

Delamination needs shearing force to separate stacked kaolin sheets. Hammer mill’s impact mechanism cannot achieve effective delamination. It only shatters particles, so it cannot produce high‑aspect‑ratio delaminated kaolin.

  1. “Hammer mill can replace stirred mill to produce coating‑grade kaolin”: Not feasible. Severe platelet destruction and wide particle distribution make hammer‑milled kaolin unqualified for paper top‑coat.
  2. “Hammer mill can process wet kaolin”: High moisture feed leads to screen blockage, frequent shutdown. It is designed for dry crushing.

A hammer mill can be used for kaolin processing, but its role is limited to dry primary crushing of lump ore and de‑agglomeration of calcined kaolin clinker, as well as production of low‑requirement dry filler‑grade kaolin. Due to violent impact destroying kaolin lamellar structure and inability to reach ultrafine particle size, hammer mill cannot be used to produce high‑value delaminated coating‑grade kaolin. In modern kaolin plants, hammer mill is mostly deployed in the front‑end of production line for size reduction, and matched with ball mill or stirred mill for fine grinding.
