What is the maximum throughput of a kaolin air classifier mill

The maximum throughput of a kaolin air classifier mill is not a fixed value. It heavily depends on the target finished particle size, kaolin feed properties, system airflow design and equipment model. For standalone integrated air classifier mills (with built-in grinding + classification), and separate turbo air classifiers matched with ball mills for kaolin dry processing, the practical ranges are as follows.

Typical throughput ranges

  1. Small laboratory / pilot models: 0.02–0.5 t/h. For lab testing and small batch trial production of high-fineness kaolin (D97 ≤ 5 μm).
  2. Medium industrial air classifier mills: 0.5–5 t/h. Widely used for coating-grade kaolin at D97 8–15 μm.
  3. Large industrial turbo air classifier units (closed-circuit with ball mill): 5–25 t/h as standard maximum continuous throughput. Custom engineered large systems can reach up to 30 t/h for coarse kaolin products, such as ceramic-grade kaolin with D97 >20 μm.

Important note: Throughput drops sharply when finer kaolin is required. For example, a classifier with a rated maximum 15 t/h for D97=20 μm kaolin may only run at 3–4 t/h when producing D97=5 μm ultrafine kaolin. Finer cut size increases internal circulating load and restricts system powder loading.

Key factors limiting maximum throughput

  • Target particle size: The single biggest factor. Finer finished PSD reduces maximum allowable throughput.
  • Kaolin moisture and agglomeration: Moisture above 1–2% causes particle agglomeration, reduces dispersion and lowers effective classification capacity.
  • System air balance: Blower volume, negative pressure and dust collector capacity must match the classifier. Insufficient airflow becomes a bottleneck before the classifier rotor reaches its limit.
  • Rotor size and speed: Larger diameter rotors handle higher powder loading; high rotor speed for fine cuts reduces maximum feed rate.
  • Feed particle distribution: Well pre-ground, dispersed kaolin feed enables higher throughput than raw kaolin with large lumps.

Practical reference from kaolin dry processing lines

On kaolin-mill.com closed-circuit ball mill + air classifier systems:

  • At D97=15 μm, the largest model reaches 11 t/h finished kaolin output.
  • At D97=10 μm, the same line drops to 8 t/h finished product.

For commercial dry kaolin processing:

  • Standard maximum throughput for large air classifier mills: 20–25 t/h for coarse grades
  • For ultrafine coating kaolin (D97 ≤ 10 μm), realistic maximum finished throughput is usually under 5 t/h.
