How to prevent temperature rise during kaolin ultrafine grinding?

Temperature rise is common in kaolin ultrafine grinding. Friction and impact between grinding media, particles and mill liners convert mechanical energy into heat. Excessive high temperature can cause kaolin platelet deformation, organic modifier degradation, powder agglomeration, and even accelerate wear of mill components. For ceramic-lined kaolin grinding systems, multiple cooling strategies can be applied to control operating temperature.

1. Optimize grinding operating parameters to reduce heat generation

This is the primary method to cut heat at the source.

  • Reduce mill rotational speed appropriately. Higher speed increases collision frequency and friction. Adjust speed to meet target fineness without excess energy input.
  • Control feed rate steadily. Under-feeding leads to excessive collisions between grinding media themselves and generates extra heat; over-feeding causes overload and poor dispersion. Maintain a stable continuous feed.
  • Optimize grinding media grading and filling ratio. Too high media filling rate raises friction. Match media size to raw kaolin particle size, avoid unnecessary intense impact.
  • Prevent over-grinding. Once target PSD is reached, qualified fine kaolin should be quickly separated by the classifier in closed-loop circuit. Retaining ultra-fine particles inside the mill increases heat accumulation.

2. Apply mill body cooling systems

Wet ultrafine grinding

Wet bead mills and stirred mills commonly use jacket cooling.

  • Circulate cooling water through the mill jacket to take away heat from the grinding chamber wall. Monitor cooling water inlet and outlet temperature.
  • Control slurry inlet temperature. Pre-cool feed slurry in advance if ambient temperature is high.
  • Maintain proper slurry solid content. Too high solid content increases slurry viscosity and friction, accelerating heat build-up.

Dry ultrafine grinding

Dry grinding generates much more heat than wet grinding.

  • Adopt cold air feeding. Introduce low-temperature ambient air into the grinding and classification system. The air stream carries heat out of the grinding chamber.
  • Increase system air volume properly within the allowable range. Air acts as both conveying medium and cooling medium. Do not exceed air velocity that causes loss of fine kaolin product.
  • Use water-jacketed cooling on the mill cylinder and classifier housing for high-power dry mills.

3. Optimize material circulation and heat removal in closed circuit

  • Increase the discharge rate of finished fine powder. Remove hot qualified kaolin particles out of the grinding loop rapidly.
  • Check cyclone separator and baghouse heat dissipation. Avoid blocked pipelines and accumulated powder, which trap heat inside the circuit.
  • Avoid repeated regrinding of coarse fractions for long cycles. Continuous recirculation accumulates heat step by step.

4. Material formulation and additive adjustment

  • In wet grinding, add suitable dispersants or grinding aids to lower slurry viscosity. Reduced friction between kaolin platelets reduces heat generation.
  • For dry grinding with surface modification: select high-temperature-resistant modifiers. Even with cooling, local hot spots may exist; avoid low-temperature-decomposable organic additives.
  • Keep raw kaolin at proper moisture. Over-dry kaolin has stronger friction and tends to create more heat during dry milling.

5. Equipment design and maintenance measures

  • Use ceramic lining and ceramic grinding media. Compared with metal liners and steel balls, ceramic materials produce less frictional heat and avoid hot-spot metal friction.
  • Inspect wear parts regularly. Worn liners and deformed grinding media cause irregular collision patterns and extra heat. Replace worn components in time.
  • Reduce bearing heat: strengthen lubrication and install bearing temperature sensors with over-temperature alarm.
  • Install temperature sensors at the mill chamber outlet, classifier and main bearing. Set interlock protection: automatically reduce feed or shut down if temperature exceeds the preset threshold.

6. Auxiliary environmental control

  • For workshop environment, maintain ventilation. Good workshop ventilation dissipates radiant heat from mill surface.
  • In summer high-temperature seasons, use chilled water or refrigerated air for large-capacity ultrafine lines.

Potential consequences of uncontrolled high temperature

  • Organic grinding aids or coupling agents decompose and lose modification effect.
  • Fine kaolin platelets re-agglomerate, making particle size control harder.
  • Thermal stress accelerates aging of ceramic lining, leading to cracking risk.
  • In wet grinding, high temperature may change slurry rheology and affect downstream filtration.

To prevent temperature rise during kaolin ultrafine grinding, the strategy combines reducing heat generation at source and enhancing heat removal. Operators tune mill speed, feed rate and media parameters, use jacket cooling (wet) or cold airflow (dry), adopt ceramic linings, deploy real-time temperature monitoring, and remove qualified fines quickly from the closed grinding loop. Stable temperature protects kaolin lamellar morphology, preserves additive performance and extends service life of mill wear parts.
