Ball mills can be perfectly combined with air classifiers to build a closed-circuit continuous grinding and classification system, which is widely adopted in kaolin and other mineral powder processing lines. This configuration is the mainstream solution for stable mass production of fine and ultrafine powders.
Working principle of the combined system
Raw kaolin is continuously fed into the ball mill for grinding. After milling, the powder mixture is transported to the turbo air classifier by airflow. The classifier separates qualified fine kaolin powder as finished products. Oversized coarse particles are automatically returned back to the ball mill inlet for re-grinding. The whole loop runs 24h continuously without frequent shutdown for screening or material handling.
Core advantages
- Stable continuous output: The closed loop eliminates batch production interruption. Production capacity can be maintained steadily for long-term operation.
- Precise particle size control: The classifier adjusts rotor speed and air volume to control cut size, delivering consistent PSD and avoiding over-grinding.
- Higher grinding efficiency: Coarse rejects are recycled, reducing unnecessary fine particle retention inside the ball mill and lowering unit energy consumption.
- Flexible product switching: Operators can adjust classifier parameters to produce different kaolin powder grades without changing mill media significantly.
Key design & operation considerations
- Match the ball mill throughput with the classifier processing capacity to prevent material accumulation or insufficient feed.
- Control circulating load within a reasonable range; too high circulating load will cause mill blockage and overload.
- Maintain stable airflow balance across the whole system, including mill ventilation, classifier air supply and dust collector negative pressure.
- Regular inspection of ball mill lining, grinding media and classifier rotor wear to keep consistent classification performance.
- Install online particle size monitoring to track finished kaolin quality in real time during continuous operation.
This system requires careful system balancing. If the feed moisture of kaolin is too high, powder agglomeration will occur, affecting classification efficiency. The whole set also occupies larger floor space compared with standalone grinding equipment, and needs supporting dust removal equipment to meet environmental requirements.
In summary, integrating an air classifier with a ball mill is a mature, reliable technical route for continuous kaolin powder manufacturing, especially suitable for medium and large-scale kaolin processing plants.
