How to measure the bulk density of kaolin powder?

Bulk density (also called apparent density) of kaolin powder reflects the mass of powder occupying a given volume. It is divided into loose bulk density and tapped bulk density. This parameter guides silo design, conveying, packaging, formulation and filling applications for kaolin fillers. The test follows standard powder bulk density procedures, such as ISO 60 or ASTM B212.

Required test equipment

  • A funnel with controlled orifice
  • A calibrated cylindrical measuring cup (fixed known volume, e.g., 100 mL)
  • A scraper blade
  • Precision balance (accuracy ≥0.01 g)
  • Stand and clamp to fix the funnel at a set height above the cup
  • Tapping machine (for tapped bulk density)
  • Dry sample container, sieve, oven

Sample preparation

  1. Take representative kaolin powder from finished batches. Break soft agglomerates gently with a sieve; avoid crushing primary kaolin platelets.
  2. Dry the sample to constant weight at 105 ℃ and cool to room temperature, eliminating moisture-induced agglomeration that distorts results.
  3. Ensure the sample is free of foreign debris. High moisture or hard lumps will cause inconsistent packing and unreliable readings.

Step 1: Measure loose bulk density

Loose bulk density is the density when kaolin flows freely into the cup without vibration or tapping.

  1. Place the measuring cup exactly under the funnel outlet at a fixed drop height.
  2. Pour kaolin powder slowly through the funnel. Let powder overflow the top of the cup naturally. Do not shake or vibrate the cup during filling.
  3. Use the flat scraper to skim off excess powder level with the top edge of the cup. Avoid pressing powder down.
  4. Weigh the powder inside the cup. Subtract the empty cup mass to get net powder mass.
  5. Calculation formula:
Loose bulk density = net powder mass / volume of measuring cup (g/mL or g/cm³)
  6. Repeat 2–3 parallel tests and take the average value. Discard abnormal data.

Step 2: Measure tapped bulk density

Tapped bulk density shows powder packing after standardized tapping, simulating compaction during storage and transportation.

  1. Fill the measuring cup with kaolin powder following the same loose filling method above.
  2. Mount the cup on an automatic tapping machine, set fixed tapping amplitude and tapping count (usually 100 or 1250 taps per standard).
  3. After tapping, scrape the powder flat and weigh the sample.
  4. Calculation formula:
Tapped bulk density = tapped powder mass / cup volume

Key influencing factors and common errors

  1. Agglomeration: Kaolin easily forms soft clumps. Large agglomerates create voids and lower measured bulk density; crushing primary platelets changes packing behaviour.
  2. Moisture: Wet kaolin sticks together, leading to unstable packing and false high or low readings. Samples must be fully dried before testing.
  3. Falling height: Changing funnel height alters impact force on powder and changes loose bulk density. Keep the height consistent in every test.
  4. Scraping operation: Pressing down while scraping compresses powder and causes higher readings.
  5. Particle size and shape: Lamellar kaolin platelets tend to trap air, resulting in lower bulk density than spherical mineral fillers. Finer kaolin powder normally has lower bulk density.

Practical meaning for kaolin production

The difference between loose and tapped bulk density indicates powder flowability. A large difference means poor flow and higher caking risk. Bulk density data helps set screw feeder speed, design silo discharge, calculate bag filling weight and verify product consistency batch by batch.

Bulk density measurement of kaolin powder includes loose bulk density and tapped bulk density. The procedure consists of sample drying and de-agglomeration, free pouring into a calibrated cup, scraping, weighing and calculation. Tapped bulk density requires mechanical tapping. Strict control of moisture, agglomeration and operation steps is required to obtain repeatable results.
